Electrifying the Future: Unveiling the Hyundai Ioniq 5N

Hyundai’s first-ever electric car, the Ioniq 5 is a fantastic vehicle. It’s stylish, pretty efficient, and relatively affordable. However, the latest reincarnation, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N is here and it’s S. Korea’s quickest high-performance electric car. The manufacturer claims it’s also a “corner rascal”, which is a testament to the fact that EVs can be fun around the track as well as on the road.

The New Hyundai 2023 Ioniq 5 N

Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 N made its debut at the 2023 Goodwood Festival of Speed, following its latest round of testing at the Nurburgring track. The Ioniq 5 N’s dual electric motors put out 601 horsepower normally, but thanks to the N Grin Boost feature, they get an adrenaline injection that temporarily bumps power output to 641 ponies. 

It also flaunts a range of athletic hardware including a large rear diffuser, larger wheels, stickier tires, wider fenders, big brakes, and a racier nosepiece.

Design and Styling

The Ioniq 5 N has been developed for people who love to drive. Even if you’re not a driving enthusiast, you’ll find the sporty styling a treat. 

Some significant changes have been made to the Ioniq 5 to create this high-performance variant. Its elongated, widened and lowered design enhances this crossover’s stance. 

At the front, the 5 N is sporting a unique bumper with a visibly bigger air intake in the lower area and vertical air curtains. It’s also got a meshed, functional grille, that complements the athletic feel of the vehicle beautifully. Additional cooling is provided for the car internals by way of air flaps.

You won’t mistake this model for any other Ioniq 5 thanks to the N logo placed between the headlights, on the right side of the mask. Another identifying feature is a “Luminous Orange” headlight at the bottom of the black bumper cover.

The 21-inch forged aluminum wheels are wrapped in sticky 275/35R21 Pirelli P-Zero tires and the underbody skirts and “Luminous Orange” highlight continuing along each side give this EV a track-ready appearance. Another styling feature worth mentioning is the N-branded brake callipers. 

To the rear, there’s a special wing-type spoiler with integrated triangular brake light, an orange-accented rear diffuser, vertical air outlets, and a black bumper cover with checker flag reflector graphics. 

The regular Ioniq 5 features a variety of sustainable measures. These are included in the 5 N together with recycled tire pigment paint.   

Interior

Inside the cabin of the Ioniq 5 N, it’s fully black with Performance Blue accents.  Driving enthusiasts will find the new three-spoke steering wheel a welcome change. While the center console has knee pads, shin support, and a sliding armrest. There is also an extension in the lower part for enhanced rigidity. 

In the front are driver and passenger-N-branded bucket seats that sit 20cm lower. The seats have reinforced bolsters and are covered in recycled poly Alcantara seat cover cloth upholstery. To increase the sporty feel inside the cabin, there are metal pedals, footrests, and door scuff panels.  

N Active Sound + N e-shift

A big drawback of any high-performance electric car is its silence. However, there is one possible solution that Hyundai has developed for adding emotion to the driving experience. 

N Active Sound+ for performance EVs and N-shift were developed to complement artificially generated sound. 

N Active Sound+

This generates futuristic EV sound and ICE-like engine and exhaust sounds so drivers can enjoy a more engaging driving experience. It’s played through a 10-speaker system consisting of 8 internal and 2 external speakers. This feature also helps drivers understand the throttle input. 

N e-shift

This replaces the 8-speed dual-clutch transmissions of traditional gas-powered N cars. As well as controlling the torque output of the motor, it also simulates the jolt feeling when shifting gear. 

EV Motor, Power, and Performance

The power for the Ioniq 5 N comes from a dual motor, all-wheel configuration that makes 601 horsepower, most of the time. However, use the N Grin Boost feature and the powertrain can spin up to a maximum of 641 horsepower temporarily. Thanks to the all-wheel drive system, you can distribute that power to the front or rear wheels, whatever you feel necessary. If you fancy your chances at handing the tail out in lurid slides, there’s even a drift mode. 

This little beast has four different modes: Eco, Normal, Sport, and N which adjust the steering weight, throttle sensitivity, and damping. To help the car feel even more like a high-performance vehicle with a multi-speed automatic, Hyundai has programmed in a simulated gearshift feature. It very cleverly mimics the feel of a shift when you pull the steering-wheel-mounted paddles. 

Specifications

• Dimensions: The Ioniq 5 N is 3.1 in. longer, 2 in. wider, and 0.8 in. lower than the Ioniq 5 and has chassis and body reinforcements to improve torsional rigidity
• Structure: Additional welding points and adhesives make the Ioniq 5 N’s BIW structure much stronger. Other changes include reinforced battery and motor mounting, WRC-inspired integrated drive axles, and enhanced front and rear subframes.
• Steering system: A stronger steering column improves rigidity which together with a higher steering ratio and enhanced torque increases driver confidence. The suspension performance range is widened due to the additional wheel sensors and increased damper size.
• Braking: The mechanical braking system of the Ioniq 5 N includes 40mm discs with four-piston monobloc calipers in the front and 360mm rear discs with single-piston calipers. 
• Infotainment and connectivity: Features a 12.0 touchscreen infotainment system and 12-inch digital gauge cluster. In addition, it includes voice-recognition software, as well as standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. 

Battery and Charging

The battery in the Hyundai Ioniq 5 is a fourth-gen battery pack that has a heightened energy density of 670 wH/L. This is an 8% improvement on the third generation that has been achieved using new high-capacity materials and optimal battery cell design and process.

The 84 kWh battery pack supports charging at up to 350 kW. It takes just 18 minutes to charge from 10% to 80%. On a full charge, the car can deliver a range of 250 miles. 

A feature called the “N Battery Pre-Conditioning” allows the driver to optimize battery cells to their most power-efficient temperature. In addition, it can also be set to Drag mode or Track mode. In Drag mode, the battery cells are prepared for a short burst of full power. In the Track mode, the cells are kept at the lowest possible temperature in order to maximize the number of laps.  

Price and Release Date

According to Till Wartenberg, Vice President and Head of N Brand Management and Motorsport sub-division, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N will arrive in North America at the beginning of 2024. Prices may start at around $60,000.
